Specialist Schools Status

The Specialist Schools Programme

The Specialist Schools Programme’s aim is to help raise standards in secondary education, in partnership with private sectors and supported by additional Government funding.

In 2004, Featherstone High School successfully submitted their bid for specialist status in Technology. After consultation with our own students, staff and governors, Featherstone Technology College was chosen to reflect our new specialist status, along with a new logo.

As part of Technology College Status, there are two elements; a School Plan and a Community Plan.

What does it mean to be a specialist school?

• To raise attainment and achievement in our specialist subjects of Technology, Science, Mathematics and ICT, as well as the whole curriculum.

• To strengthen and develop the quality of teaching and learning strategies of the specialist subjects and use them to help raise standards throughout the college.

• To extend the opportunities for vocational and enrichment activities.

• To develop characteristics which signal its specialist ethos and identity.

• To work collaboratively with partner schools to provide or facilitate high quality learning opportunities and outcomes.

• To develop the capacity to provide or facilitate high quality learning opportunities and outcomes in specialist subjects, either working as an individual school or working collaboratively with other schools, within the school’s wider local community, including local businesses and employers.

Impact

Technology College Status has already impacted dramatically on the college’s recent improvements in:

• Results

• Quality of Teaching and Learning

• Resources

• Provision

• Enrichment

We are very proud of our Technology College Status and the impact it has made so far, and look forward to implementing and developing new strategies.

RE-DESIGNATION 2009

Following a very pleasing 'good' report from Ofsted in April, FTC has successfully re-designated, securing its Specialist Schools status.
